Two additional teachers have already been appointed at a school in Botriver where most of the children come from the townships in the area. KIND pays the two teachers' salaries every month. Before the teachers were appointed, the class consisted of 72 students, but has since been split in two. Thus: two jobs created and at the same time the quality of tuition improved.

Other initiatives so far:
•  School terrain cleared of weeds and shrubs to create a play area for children;
•  Jungle gyms built on school terrain where children can express themselves during breaks;
•  Posters with maths tables, alphabet, global map, universe, etc. bought and hung in the classrooms; and
•  The purchase of various handbooks.

In the meantime a big golf day has been organised to raise funds for a hostel where 26 alcohol dependent children live. This dependency developed in the brains of the children because of alcohol abuse by the mother during pregnancy. As a result, the children have problems concentrating in class, a low IQ, a tendency to be hyperactive and aggressive, etc. Such children cannot function in a "normal" school. And, because there aren't sufficient facilities available in South Africa, many children slip through the cracks and get no tuition at all.

The golf day helped us to reach our objective in raising R120 000.00 (about Euro 15 000). What a wonderful result! With this money a teacher can be employed to give the special education needed to teach these boys. The full amount is not paid all at once to an institution; KIND pays the teacher in person.

The sleeping quarters of the children also need to be improved. The children are currently sleeping in sea containers that are placed next to buildings. Large holes have been hacked into the walls into which the containers were installed. Each container houses a double bunk bed that sleeps two children. This is not ideal accommodation as the summers are extremely warm with cold winters where the temperature can be as low as 5 degrees at night. Our next project will be to create better sleeping conditions for these children.

Because we are reminded daily of the harsh facts, we know exactly where aid is necessary and personally oversee and monitor current projects. We (CHILD) do NOT believe in just giving MONEY, but rather in the creation of facilities, opportunities and employment. No single person can change the whole world, but together we can make the lives of many children in South Africa happier, and give them a chance for a better future. Each child has the right to be happy.
